About Trieste

Trieste is in the North-Eastern part of Italy, in the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, at the borders with Austria and Slovenia.

Get to Trieste by PLANE

Here is a list of the most convenient airports to get to Trieste. Consider, however, that it is also possible to reach Trieste by train after landing at major Italian airports, such as Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia Airport – Trieste

The closest airport to Trieste (33 km from the city center) is the Friuli-Venezia Giulia airport, in Ronchi dei Legionari, with flights to and from London, Munich, Belgrade, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Turin, Genoa.

The airport is connected to the city center via a bus, which goes from the bus stop in front of the Arrivals exit to Trieste Central Station (Piazza della Libertà, 11). The bus timetable (line 51) can be found at: www.aptgorizia.it. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes, it costs 3.60 € and it takes approximately an hour to get to the city center. Please note that on Saturdays and Sundays buses run less often (once per hour).

You can also decide to reach Monfalcone Railway Station by bus line 10 (0.96 €; www.aptgorizia.it) and to get a 20-minute train ride to Trieste Central Station (2.50 €). The train schedule can be found at: www.trenitalia.com.

A Taxi service will also be available from 8 a.m. to midnight in front of the Arrivals exit (telephone number: +39 0481 779193). The ride, depending on traffic and luggage, will cost approximately 50-60 €.

Marco Polo Airport – Venice

Marco Polo Airport is bigger that the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Airport and there are direct flights from the most important national and international airports.

Once at Marco Polo Airport, the easiest way to get to Trieste is to reach Venezia Mestre Train Station by bus and to get a regional train to Trieste Central Station. From the Airport to Venezia Mestre Railway Station there is a bus shuttle connection (the bus fare is 3 euros; timetables and information at www.atvo.it). A local bus (number 15: www.actv.it) can also be used: it is cheaper (1 €) but a little bit slower. However, it departs more often from the airport. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get to Venezia Mestre Station (the bus will leave you exactly in front of the main entrance). There is a regional train to Trieste every hour; the trip will last a little less than 2 hours and will cost 10.50 €. For timetables check www.trenitalia.com.

Treviso Airport

Treviso airport (145 km from Trieste) is a small, low-budget airport, which can be reached from Belgium, Germany, Great Britain and Spain mainly with Ryanair flights.

The airport is very efficiently connected to Venezia Mestre Railway Station with the Ryanair bus shuttle service: the ride takes approximately 45 minutes and costs 5 € (return: 9 €). The bus timetable can be found at www.atvo.it. From Venezia Mestre Station there is a regional train to Trieste every hour; the trip will last a little less than 2 hours and will cost 10.50 €. Ljubljana Airport – Slovenia

Ljubljana Airport is reached by low-cost airlines, but it takes quite a long time to get from Ljubljana Airport to Trieste by public transportation. It can be convenient, however, when renting a car.

Notice that the train from Ljubljana to Trieste will not reach Trieste Central Station but only Trieste Villa Opicina; from there, the city center can be reached by bus (www.triestetrasporti.it) or by taxi (telephone number: +39 040 307730).

Get to Trieste by TRAIN

Trieste Central Station can be reached with Eurostar and Intercity trains from the most important Italian cities (the Eurostar train from Roma Termini to Trieste Centrale takes 6 hours and 12 minutes and costs 51 €; the Eurostar train from Milano Centrale to Trieste Centrale takes 4 hours and 35 minutes and costs 34.10 €).

It is also possible to reach Venezia Mestre Station and then get a regional train connection to Trieste (approximately 2 hours, 10.50 €).

Get to Trieste by BUS

The bus station is located next to the train station (check out the map). There are many international bus lines which may be a cheap solution for your travelling. The timetables of the international lines are available here: www.autostazionetrieste.it

Get to the University and the Student’s home

During our international events, participants stay at the student’s dorm, ARDISS’ (ex ERDISU’s) Residence E3, which is inside the main university campus.

To reach the university or the student’s home from the train station you can take the buses No. 3, 17/ or 39. The 17/ is the most frequent. Tickets for the bus may be bought in the news-stand inside the main hall of the train station, just near the exit. Tickets may not be bought on the bus. An alternative is the taxi (telephone number: +39 040 307730).
